The Orillia Festival of Banners awarded four generous People’s Choice cash prizes to celebrate the work of local artists and foster community spirit as part of the Streets Alive! weekend. The festival invited design submissions from artists who sought the opportunity to paint a specially sized banner in the festival’s first live banner-painting exhibition, held on June 6 and 7, 2009, as part of the inaugural Streets Alive! weekend in historic downtown Orillia.
Streets Alive! is a high-energy outdoor weekend event designed to kick off Orillia’s Festival of Banners and celebrate the arts. During this weekend, 12 artists selected by a jury painted banners in the street — Peter Street, to be exact — as the public looked on. The public then voted for their favourites, and the artists of the top four banners received substantial cash prizes.
